Iowa City Schools' $191 Million Bond Our Children & Community Deserve Better

THIS BOND IS EXPENSIVE AND UNFOCUSED

$191 million is a huge amount. Essential projects get mixed with less important projects. $191 million in debt could be authorized with one vote, but there’s no way to ensure that taxpayers’ money is spent well.

ENROLLMENT PROJECTIONS ARE UNRELIABLE

Projections for the number of students in each building have changed several times. This bond builds more capacity than present projections show we need. Some projects may not be necessary in the next 10 years.

DON'T CLOSE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS

Hoover Elementary School is at the core of a central, walkable, mixed-income, densely populated neighborhood and should be preserved. It is financially irresponsible to demolish a $12 million asset and rebuild the same capacity for more money on the edge of town.

WE CAN BUILD A BETTER BOND FOR ALL

What will happen if this bond loses? We will get a better bond; the choice is NOT between this bond or nothingThere are better options that show respect for students, teachers, staff, unions, sustainable development, preservation of existing schools, and taxpayers.
